H1 vs. VG-10

Can anyone offer a good comparison regarding how H1 and VG-10 stack up against each other in terms of edge-holding and durability? I'm not at all concerned about corrosion resistance, just the other factors.

See, I'm trying to decide whether to get a Delica4 or a Salt 1 frn. I like the Salt's blade shape and lighter weight, but I don't want to give up any performance by choosing H1 over the D4's VG-10.*

* Again, H1's corrosion resistance, to me, is a fine benefit, but in no way is it a deciding factor. I don't live anywhere near the sea and anyway, when I DID, I carried an ATS-55 and never had an issue with corrosion.

VG-10 has much better edge retention than H1 in plain edge, but very similar edge retention in SE. H1's edge gets work hardened when it is sharpened, and if I remember right the plain edge is at 65 rockwell on the edge while the SE is at 68 rockwell at the edge, which is probably why it compares so much better to VG-10 in SE form (at least in the cardboard cutting test I remember seeing).

Well, I don't know much about the technical factors of the steels in question, but this is what I've learned from using them....

The VG-10 will hold an edge longer, all other things being equal.

But H-1 has the ability to get sharper than any other blade-steel I have used.
And, because it's not that hard, it is one of the easiest steels to sharpen.
But it also scratches very easily and looks very used in a short amount of time.

Good luck,
Allen.

I have an Endura 3 and a Pacific Salt.

If you're not going in or near the sea, go for VG-10.

(If you like the unlined, light, less "screwy" Salt I, you will probably still be able to find the older Delica 3.)

I actually love the look.

On abrasive materials like cardboard, VG-10 has a large advantage, meaning like 2:1. The toughness goes pretty much the same but in favor of H1.
