H1, worth it?

Hello knife nuts. I recently got my first spyderco (at Christmas) and I absolutely love it. It's a fully serrated Delica 4 light weight with VG-10 steel. Now I really like spyderco. I really like it now haha. So I've been surfing the web and scrolling through the spyderco dealers when I came across the "H1 Atlantic salt". Well now I'm very interested in this H1. I hear the steel hardens with use. I am very intrigued by this. So if I were to get a spyderco with H1, would it be worth it? Is the steel worth it? I like the price for what sounds like it could be a very nice stainless (I live in Florida so I like stainless :D ) as for the blade type I'll figure that out. Thanks guys.

The steel work hardens when they grind the serrations. Not through use or home sharpening.

If you work near the water or on a boat yes it would be worth it. If not, I don't think it is worth it. I live in Miami and don't have any rust issues. VG-10 will hold an edge better than H1.

Make sure you get the SE version of whatever knife your looking at in H1, as BIOG said above the H1 goes threw a work hardening during the grinding of the serrations so the edge is actually harder than that of a PE H1 blade.

BTW the Spyderco Salt is the H1 version of the Delica, in case your wondering.

If its gonna be in marine conditions, get H1.
I have often sharpened a Pacific Salt PE that gets marine use every week for a friend of mine. The steel does not harden with use/sharpening.
It's easy to sharpen and gets nice and sharp. Its edge holding is certainly not as good as VG10.
Sorry I have no experience with SE H1 knives.

But the thing is, that soot don't rust. Take it fishing, surf casting or on the boat, use it for bait, tackle, cleaning fish, swish it around in the tide to wash the chunky bits off, toss it in the gear bag. Pull it out a week later and it has no rust. None. Its gritty and smelly and needs a good clean, but it just dont rust. That's the reason to get H1.

I personally like H1, particularly in SE configuration. I own several, but my most used right now are the SE Pacific, SE Tasman, and SE Salt 1. In my experience, the SE H1 holds an edge every bit as good as SE VG-10. I have taken my Pacific into the ocean and it was unaffected by the salt water. But in general I don't go into the sea anymore. But I still favor H1. The SE can sometimes roll a bit if you contact something hard, but it's easy enough to correct on a Sharpmaker. I find the serrations on the Tasman to be particularly solid and durable; I don't know if that's because the inward curve of the blade gives the serrated edge more solidity or not.

Just my .02.

I have had a couple, both PE, and love H1. H1 is my standard EDC at work. Sharpens easily to a great edge that remains plenty long enough for my purposes. If I use my knife hard during the week a 10 minute trip to the sharpmaker and it shaves. Best of all, as Noddy13 said, it will not rust! I have had my knives rust in my pocket from sweat, etc. at work. I have nicer, more expensive knives. I would not even consider carrying them at work. H1 is impressive with what it delivers, especially at the price point. I recently got a Southard (my new favorite knife) and a sprint run Dyad (to replace my favorite knife that was stolen years ago.) I had been dreaming of a Dyad Jr in H1, but now I want a H1 frn flipper with the spydie hole big enough to snap into my Carharts.

The salts are awesome. They will not rust! I have mine soaking in saltwater almost everyday kayak fishing and it just won't rust. Serrated edge is the way to go with h1. Se performance rivals the best steels out there IMO. Plain edge h1 edge retention is mediocre at best.

I have a fully serrated pacific salt that is one of my favorite spydercos. I have several that are much more expensive, but none that see as much use as that one.

The Atlantic Salt....well all Salt Models are worth it IMO.

I love my Atlantic Salt. Some Glamor shots

My Salt-1....that I believe is somewhere around 6 or 7 years old now. It did not have the H-1 logo on the blade.

^^ nice save :D

Blade shape is the main difference I believe.

This Should help you to see the differences.

i have had a large PS black plain edge in my edc for about 2 years now. its my beater knife. i work in a kitchen so its always wet, and its very humid in the summer months. I have had no issues with s30v or 154cm or other super steels. however i have rusted up a few mild stainless steels from carrying them at work. so i 99% of the time go to with the pasific salt. its super light, rust proof and has a great blade shape with size to go along with it all. i love my blade in h1, it takes a wicked sharp edge and it holds it long enough for me. i am usually cutting open boxes mostly to get to product with the occasional mystery material around the kitchen and i have never said "damn this thing isnt holding an edge"... its just not a super steel. however for my uses the 100% rust proofness is a good trade for a little less edge retention. it has been compaired to 420c i believe

So, I have been playing with my Christmas knives for a few weeks and come across this H1 thread. I was planning on sharpening up my Pacific Salt this weekend, in preparation for work next week. Then I see the pic posted of another proud owners beater.:thumbup: It did look exactly like mine. So, I decided to give min a little bit of love. I hope you guys like it, since it is the first time I have ever tried anything like this! I should have took some "before" pics, I know!

For anyone wanting to polish Spyderco clips, I watched all the videos on youtube and have found a better method. I fooled around for quite some time with my Dremel and the polishing compound. The scotch brite pads for the Dremel will make the black coating run from them. That is also the final finish that I left on the clip! Would have taken about 2 minutes, if I had started there.

Once I got on a roll I decided to polish up the part of the blade where the most coating was scratched off. I didn't get too carried away since this is my beater. I'll give it a trip to the work sharp tomorrow and call it good. Think it turned out nice!

HELL YEAH Worth it.

Pimped mine by a clever Chap and took it on a 6 month Contract on the Indian ocean, assisted with every task, cutting mooring line, fishing tasks, cutting down provision boxes and spreading peanut butter, etc, what a champ. Mind you had it pimped first for better cutting, and run with a 320(BLUE)grit DMT edge, keeps on cutting toilet paper, shaving with minor touch ups, only hasle I had was the nylon mooring rope friction sticking.

What a Champ, highly impressed. (I do believe the regrind assisted the hardening though)

H1 is certainly worth it for some applications! I have a salt as my gym knife and can clip it iwb without worrying
