I bought one those little edge marking scribes from K&G or was it Texas supply, I forget, years ago but it's sat in the drawer for the most part cause I just couldn't scribe a straight line with the stinkin thing!
Well, I figured out why it wasn't workin for me and now I can scribe a straight line all day with it!
What I was doing wrong is putting too much pressure on it. That alone was making it skew off some and make a squiggly line. This time I says to myself, Self, I says, use light even pressure, don't mash it hard like you're trying to embed it in the steel. So I kick back with my feet up and gently run the thing down the bar of L6 and there it was. A most beautiful and straight scribed line!
Moral to the story?
Well, there aint one really, just don't push on your edge scribe and you'll get a straighter line!

the best and easiest scribe is a file with the hard end ground into a v at the appropriate height.

And if it isn't exactly in the center, turn it over and do it again and that will give you a double line very close to the center, similiar to marking it for the grind of the bevels. :)
