I'm trying to figure out the Habaki.

Unfortunately what I'm coming across is a very disjointed explanation of disparate aspects, peppered with bad pictures, explanations assuming huge gaps, and videos where people cheat and don't use the traditional methods.

Does anyone have a top down guide to help me understand the concept and construction?

If I had an example in front of me, I'd just look at that, but alas, I don't have access to a working example.

Any links to resources would be most appreciated!

Thank you so much. I will dig into this.

The moderators on this forum are awesome.

nice link ! for step #4 i use the jaws of the bench vise with a strip of sheet metal (so the jaws wont scratch the copper too bad). it will save you from having to make a jig. i anneal 3 or 4 times during that step so the copper doesnt split or rupture.

The Custom Search Engine in the Stickys will allow yo to find the many past threads on building a habaki.
Here is one I posted a few years ago:

The book, The Craft of the Japanese Sword by Leon and Hiroko Kapp and Yoshindo Yoshihara, has an excellent chapter showing the traditional technique of creating and fitting an Habaki. Clearly written with good photos.

I was able to find a copy, and just received it yesterday evening.

Thank you for the excellent recommendation!

I do have a follow up question, if you're amenable?

I would like to attempt to make a drawknife used for making the initial cut of the fuller(hi).

In this book they simply refer to it as two-handled drawknife. I have some idea from the photos, but am wondering: Are you aware of the specific term for this tool, so I can research, and try to get a clearer understanding of how the u-shaped blade is attached/clamped to the crosspiece?

Thank you...

Walter Sorrells has a great YouTube video where he shows his fuller cutting and polishing tools for katana.
