My Habilis bushtool. Loved the knife, hated the only mildly sharp pseudo Scandi grind. So I spent a few hours today doing a full height convex zero grind edge. Now it takes my stropping very well and is very scary sharp.

Already reground my Habilis trapper a few months back.

Mind sharing some details with us Sir? curious on steel and your take on how they work? they look good to me. thank you in advance.

Now that its got a real edge on it it's time to take it out and beat it up a bit. The beauty of it is now I can strop it back to razor sharp in a few seconds. The way it came...um that wasn't possible.

Sure. Here are the specs:

The Bush Tool Specs:
1095 High Carbon Steel
Rockwell 57
G-10 Handle

10 1/4" Overall Length
5 1/4" Blade Length
3/16" Thick Blade

Pseudo-Scandi Grind (has a secondary bevel) should say "had" a secondary bevel.
Gun Blued Finish love this finish, you can fix almost any damage you do with cold blue.

As far as how well the design performs. I just got it and reprofiled it. So I have to get her out and see about that one. Until then there are plenty of YT videos on the knife.

Thank you Sir. Appreciate the information/details. After you have a chance to put 'em to work.....please report back. Id like to hear the followup.

Well I have used the trapper quite a bit. I've had that for about a yr. Fantastic design. I know some folks don't like a choil but this knife does it right. The point is great for drilling starter holes and if you look at the pic you'll see that I've used the fire bearing for a few bow drill fires. The spine is plenty sharp too shower good sparks off the ferro rod. I mostly use mine for bushcrafting tasks and food prep. The trapper sucked at food prep until my high line regrind. Now it slices and shaves like a dream. No issues with rust at all on the polished edge portion. Course I keep my knives well oiled.:)

Hi Paradextactical,
I have the bushtool also and I'm planning on getting the Trapper soon. Was wondering if you could tell me how you went about regrinding your bushtool, I'd like to do the same to mine.

Thank you.

Sure. I used a smiths diamond segmented plates first. The Coarse Diamond - 325 Grit to remove the heavy grinding lines and reshape the apex bevel, removing the shoulder portion. Next the Fine Diamond - 750 Grit to remove the scratches left from the 325 and bring the micro bevel line down to the edge. All this is just reshaping not sharpening.
Next I go to a 1000 grit wet stone to hone the edge. After stoning I move to the leather stropp. Black compound to develop the micro bevel and polish the stoning marks out. At this point she should be able to slice newsprint very easily. Then I go to the green compound to refine the edge and polish the convex bevel even more.
Now, all of these steps require a bit of practice and control. This is not my first rodeo if you follow me. There are many videos online with Cliff Stamp and virtuovice if you wanna pick up some very valuable information beforehand. I only say this because I throw a small word like "stoning" or "stropping". These words are loaded with skill and technique and take up a lot of time. Hope this helps. I'll try and post some pics of during resharpening for you as well. In all, I have 5hrs in this edge.

After 325 coarse diamond. You can see that some of the initial edge still remains at this point.

After 750 fine diamond.

After 1000 grit wet stone. A mirror finish is present. This is just prior to stropping.

Thank you so much. Now I just need to get up the courage to do it. My sharpening skills are questionable. Let alone me trying to regrind my beloved Bushtool. But I will try.

Thanks, Paradextactical.

You can do it. It's only money anyway right? You'll make more.:)

On a more serious note. Practice on something less expensive, with a smaller edge line. Maybe a v edge you want to convex on thinner stock. Do that first, progress up.

Love mine! About to do the same thing soon. For now I have put a good 20 min in just sharpening it. Been doing everything with it except bow drill yet. Love this knife. It came blue'd or something and I really appreciate the dark gun metal look. Can't wait til there is a nice patina on it. Went with Kydex sheath

Well paradex, I'm getting the bug to buy a trapper. It's been something I've wanted, just not sold on it since I use my bushtool for everything, just liking the natural point and angles on the trapper. My bushtool takes too much precision on some tasks but I love it!
