At Blade 2014, I bought a knife from James Behring Jr.
He did a custom one-off from his F-1 technical series and named it "Rainbow Trout". It came with a kydek sheath that I didn't really care for.
He had some other customs that also had custom leather sheathes. James put me in touch with the maker who is also a knifemaker that was showing at Blade.
We talked some after blade and came up with a plan for the F-1 custom and while we were talking I mentioned the Busse SOB I had and thought maybe he could come up with something for the "Son of Badger". He got very excited and said being an old trapper, he had many a run in with nasty badgers and said he had something special in mind for the SOB.
I sent the two knives off..........coincidently on the other side of Ohio from Busse. We had several phone calls of progress made and after several weeks I received the call that they were finished, shipped and would be at my door Friday. I flew home late Thursday night after several weather delays, got a little sleep and awoke this morning like a kid on Christmas........only, I my case, Santa was the mail lady.
The package arrived and ...WOW..., I was blown away.
I'm quoting now from the letter he sent with the sheathes:
"Trout is pretty standard pattern of my own....I've used many times....Badger is fairly new as this is just the 3rd version (one on my own knife & One on Jim Sr's)
This one I added the paws and claws to make him look like he is crawling over the border of the sheath to TAG YER ASS!
As said, both carvings are original to me from my drawings."
These designs are all done by hand, hand painted, stained and sealed.
He even hand carved and textured the copper arrowhead harness rivits.
He also made leather lanyards for each knife with his own handmade beads of white tail & stag antler.
I purposely did not identify the maker for a couple reasons
First, I was curious if anyone knew his work (he's been around a while) and would care to guess?
and secondly...........He knows the popularity of Busse Knives, he's a small custom maker, doesn't do internet and would rather be out hunting and fishing. LOL
