Figured I'd treat my new paramilitary 2 right.
I Used a scrap of Elder I had lying around. Probably went a little overboard with the details but it was fun. I put leather on both sides. Spent a pretty decent amount of time sanding the handle. Stained it. Works great for spanking the GF too. If anyone wants one I might be interested in making one for the right price but I don't want to know which way you will use it.

Very pretty! That sort of wood finish does take some time!
Out of curiosity, how much time did you spend preparing the leather before you glued it on?

I just cut out a section big, applied glued to one side of the leather and to the wood face and then let it dry for a bit to get tacky. Then trimmed it off afterwards

Thanks for the update. As I said before, it's very pretty. It takes a lot of work to get the wood properly shaped, smooth, and finished.

That is a mighty fine looking strop, Sir. Congratz on making that one.

Nothing to compare with that pinewood-clued-piece-of-leather that I made several years ago...

any compound recommendations for my strop?

What steels will you be stropping on it? Depending on that, some compounds will be better (or worse) than others, and some may be ineffective. Low-wear steels like 1095, CV, 420HC can respond pretty well to some green compound. Middle-of-the-road steels, in terms of wear-resistance (440A/C, 154CM, VG-10, D2, etc), respond very well to aluminum oxide compounds ('white rouge', Flitz/Simichrome/Mother's Mag polishes), and those can also do a nice job with the low-wear steels; AlOx compounds are likely the most versatile for those reasons. High-wear steels with lots of vanadium carbides (S30V, etc.) will do better with diamond or CBN (Cubic Boron Nitride) compounds.

s30v cool so I'll get diamond or CBN. any brand recommendation?

I've used DMT Dia-Paste in 6/3/1µ sizes; they're all good, and on S30V, the 3µ is very impressive (I used it on basswood). Other well-reputed brands are Hand American (diamond, green compounds, maybe CBN), and you might also look up compounds from Ken Schwartz (for diamond, CBN, maybe others). I haven't used these others, but they have a very good rep on the forum.

I use the CBN 16 micron on a very thin and hard leather strop to maintain/touch up my full height convex O1 bushcraft style blade and it works great. I also more and more use it for my 1095 scandi. With a light touch, it is not overkill and can actually repair somewhat. It is always a balance between aggressiveness of the compound, its hardness and the give of the backing.
