So, i've had my Sebenza for nearly a week now, and finally convinced myself to give it a shot with the sharpmaker.

crappy photo...

Still, something super satisfying knowing you're carrying a quality blade with a hair-whittling edge on it.

Gosh, one week with a Small 21, and i'm already looking at getting another CR knife. (probably an umnumzaan)

Damn!

Did you reprofile? Or just stick with the 40% on the sharpmaker. I just got my sebbie today and am curious.

Nope no re-profile necessary for me. i used the 40 on the sharp maker. I used my seb for the first week until the factory hair popping-ness was worn away. then i took it to the flats of the fine rods one the 40 setting.

The trick is to use super light pressure - merely the weight of the blade, and to go slow.

Using the technique OldDude1 posted in the links in the bellow quote, with the flats of the fine stones i got it slightly sharper than it came from the factory, which is why i suggest you use your sebenza a bit before going at it with the sharpmaker.

Greetings: I believe the condition you have encountered regarding your Sebenza retaining an extremely sharp edge is not uncommon. You may wish to read this thread in it's entirety for a full debate on both the perception of retained edge sharpness and the purported causal factors. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=747912&highlight=s30v+hardness

Regarding why the belly of a Sebenza may seem hard to sharpen. You may wish to read posts 1 through 20 of this thread. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=740050&highlight=building

Regarding other "Issues" What some of us see as short comings, others see as assets. OldDude1

I got it hair-splitting sharp using the Ultra Fine stones for the SM i recieved today. definitely a good $27.

Geez i've gone and run out of knives to sharpen.

Big thanks to Krazichinaman and OldDude1

Congrats on getting it hair whittling sharp. You definitely got to that level much faster then I ever did!

I dont think ive ever had a knife that sharp, not even sure what that would feel like. I've never seen a knife split hair...don't even understand how that is possible?

How well does that retain its edge?

All I have done today is snip 10 or so heavy duty zip ties. It still whittled hair, so pretty good so far I think.

I'll try and take pictures whittling hair later today after work.

i put a convex edge on a sebenza for jtr357 that you could shave with. when i would offer knife sharpening a fundraisers for charity, i used to show people how sharp i can get a knife by splitting hairs down the middle. it amazes people when they see someone actually do it.

Pics of the edge or it was done with a razor blade.

It can be done.

when you said 40, you mean 20 degrees on each side right?
those edge look amazing......

I wasn't doubting that it could be done, i've done it with a factory edged sebenza.

I just wanted to see the edge of his sebenza.

Ahh my mistake :p

I've had my insingo do it with just touching it up on the Sharpmaker at the 40º setting.

It didn't want to focus on the really small curls....only have a cheap sony cybersh*t camera.

that was brave of you, i wouldn't get near my gatco with my sebenza.

Welcome to the club then :p

I got mine a bit sharper too, and i noticed getting nice curly whittles is a lot of technique. i got it so sharp it catches and snips the hair before it whittles, you actually have to be at a certain angle now.
