Hey guys .

I usually post on Busse forum but figured this was the proper place..

The design on the Hairy Carry is one of my favorites. Right when I saw this blade I had to pick one up. I used it for a steak knife and light use camp blade.
A few days ago I took the 08SE HC out to the woods because I was going on a hike. My friends and I eventually stopped to make a fire and cook some food. I took out the 08SE HC and began batoning precut wood you buy from the store.. On the third piece of wood I hit a knot, I proceeded to wiggle the blade out and, "Snap" I was not doing anything extreme. I am confused how easy it broke.

I know this is great steel so maybe there was a flaw in the heat thread or something ??

Sooo, should I just send in the blade to SW for replacment with a note or contact them beforehand explaining what happened.. If anyone can help me it is appreciated.

This was a straight break with no bending are anything.

Ohhhhh. Snap.

I would send it in with a note explaining what happened. They will make it right. (I can see this thread devolving rather quickly.)

Maybe you batonned (sp?) something like a knot early, and without noticing weakend the blade?

Did the knife break where it was in the wood? As in, how much metal is still sticking out from the wood?

Sorry about that. I guess when they say this a slicer, they MEAN slicer. There are those that say you shouldnt baton with most knives because of the stresses involved, I've always ignored them! =) I think we get spoiled by infi and SR101/77.

I've seriously chipped three 154cm blades on stuff that wasnt as remotely as challenging what you're explaing. (2 Bench's and 1 Emerson) I've heard it has poor impact resistance.

Though I'm not a fan of 154cm, I knew SRKW would take care of me so I ddint hesistate to get one. I'm sure they'll do the same for you!

Send it in, we'll take care of it.

As we've stated before, we made this knife to have a thin tip and a fine edge for a great slicer. This isn't the design I'd choose to be doing a lot of batoning or prying with but we will take care of you so don't worry.

I'll pm you with shipping details

Eric

See SRKW could make a knife out of tin foil and I'd buy it. Cause I know that even if I abuse it, so long as I didnt set out to break they'll take care of me.

No luck breaking any yet. =(

Don't do that with 154 CM!! Slice Slice Slice!! Beat on your Camp Tramp!! 154 CM, RC: 59-61, nice thin blade, Don't beat on the thing!! Eric, get him another one and tell him Slice Slice Slice!!

I could not find the tip that broke off.. It was late at night and dark . We have a camp fire going. I look for the missing piece for like 10 min them forgot about it and proceeded with the night. I also had my sarsquatch with me so that finished the job. I only baton with another piece of wood so there was not that much impact.

OMG Eric !

Those tests are pretty darn impressive :eek:

I understood the HC was a slicer, hence the reason I loved using it as a steak knife. I just figured it could do some light batoning same stuff my friend would use his DABA for.

Its all good. Thanks for the quick response. :)

I am sorry about your HCLE, Uncle Jarvis. But there is a small part of me that feels a little better. It was lonely being the only one who broke the tip on a HCLE. Mine broke in the same place, but unlike you, I was prying oak with mine. It is a great little slicer, but that tip is thin and delicate.
