I recently lost my Emerson Lagriffe and am contemplating getting a new neck knife. I'm looking into the Hideaway knives and the Claw design seems to be a good option for me. However which steel do I REALLY need. The 440C or the S30V? It's really intended as a defensive tool rather than a beater, however I do expect it to be on my neck most of the time. It could see occasional cutting, if in case my folder is out of reach. Your thoughts please!

I would get the S30V. That is the one I would buy, if I was in the market for a HAK.

They are both good steels. If it's only going to see occasional use, I doubt you could tell the difference in practice.

For that type of use it might as well be 420J2. Buy whatever is cheaper.

I'd go with S30V, but just because I'm a wannabe steel snob. Cheap stainless, or even mild steel will do what you need the knife to do- so go with whatever you want.
