HAK substitute

The short version:
I like the HAK (HideAwayKnife) a lot. I can't afford one.

The reason I love the idea of a HAK so much is that it lets you use the hand it is being held in! It loops around your fingers so that you don't lose opposable thumb usage in that hand, so you can still grip wires, hold another tool, or thumb through a manual while never dropping the knife. I don't see why every single engineer on the planet does't already have one.

The problem is that a custom version is $130, and even the UHAK (their new non-custom 440C model) is $70. I am more looking toward <$50, preferably around the $30 region; I don't mind cheaper steel, I carry a ceramic rod with me at all times anyway ($1 from ragweedforge, go pick one up the next time you get a Mora). So, do you know of any HAK substitutes?

One I've found is the CRKT Ringer, in 3Cr13 steel (not sure what that is):

Another close idea is the Cold Steel Urban Pal. It doesn't loop around your fingers, but you can use the middle and ring fingers to hold it instead, so the concept is the same. I like it a lot less though because it's more threatening-looking and in crap steel (420). Also, it's obviously impossible to sharpen without specialty rods:

Are there any more that you know of?

Magnum/Boker BO550 Escape Knife. I can put my index finger or middle finger through the loop and still use the hand. Some might not be able to fit the index finger. About $20 retail, probably can find it for less.

You can sharpen the Cold Steel serrations with a Lansky Ceramic sharpener made especially for the cold steel pattern. Comes with a keychain for around $10.

You don't have to sharpen those mini serrations. Just steel the opposite side of the blade and this will straighten them back up. (It's still a loser of a knife. :P )

Smith & Wesson Badge Knife , unfortunately fully serrated. 440C, $25.

Ontario Neck Knives, made in china. "Stainless steel", $10.

Not much else in the lower price ranges.

What do you mean???

I've read another thread about this. Supposedly, Frontsight has been so swamped with orders that she hasn't been able to keep up, but doesn't want to suspend the business either just to handle the backlog. So supposedly people have been limbo'ed in their orders lately.

I don't particularly know if it's true, and I don't want to help spread a rumor if it ended up being one. As far as I can see, the HAK site has been operational. So take this piece of info with grains of salt unless someone you trust verifies this.

I've been looking for the same thing, and the closest i see are probably the crkt / ag russell ringers, or some of the examples on the custom fixed forum (in addition to Bailey there is also JT Knives Valor II), maybe the Boker Subcom.

Yeah I don't know ....
