Well, I'm considering acquiring a Hakim. Big, heavy, awkward Egyptian rifle that fires 8mm Mauser and accepts a 10 or 25 rd magazine. I've done a little bit of research on the Hakim, and most folks seem to like theirs, but a few folks have reported problems with certain types of ammo. I hear they can take off your finger if you stick it in the wrong place, powder blows back in your face, and they occasionally jam . . . but they are relatively inexpensive and somewhat cool.

Was wondering if any of y'all have ever owned or fired one of these monstrosities and what your thoughts on the subject might be.

Thanks.

they are a wonderful rifle I sold one I had 3 years ago and wish I had not done that with the brake on it the recoil is not bad but its very loud. they are very accurate and I took many of deer with the one I had. mine never jammed you must find the gas wrench as they have an adjustable gas system that uses a special tool but you can tune it to your ammo. as far as the thumb deal its like an M1..so yes you can get m1 thumb but you will learn how to avoid it quickly..I never had any problems with power blow back so whom ever said that must of had an out of wack gas system. whats the going rate for a Hakim these days. I think 10 years ago I paid less that $100 for mine in A1 shape.

Hi,

The Hakim is a variant of the Swedish Ljungman. Most 8mm is fine, but I would stay away from the Turk surplus. It's loaded pretty hot and could accelerate wear on your rifle.

The sometimes missing gas wrench can be easily fabricated at home with a socket and Dremel tool. Here is a good tutorial on making one.

I like mine. Yes, you do need to keep your digits clear of the bolt, as it closed with considerable authority, but that has not been a problem for me. The muzzle blast isn't bad - as long as you're the one shooting it. The muzzle brake ports the gasses back and to the sides, which makes life pretty miserable for the people on both sides of you on the firing line.

I have an AG42 ljungman in 6.5x55 and haven't had any problems with lost digits or finicky functioning. Very accurate also.
