Halberd/Hawk Combat and Survival Tool

Duh.......I missed the other thread...... The design looks good to me though. I am starting to like hawks and such and that design looks pretty sweet.

C'mon people, I really want to hear your thoughts about this design! What do you like about it? What do you think could be improved? I want to make this the best possible survival tool, and your thoughts help fire up my brain!

the one problem i've had with hawks in general is edge holding isn't nearly as good as my survival knife (busse bm-e). i realize hawks are hardened for abuse from throwing and the like but what i would like to see is a hawk tempered differentially with an edge that will hold one without needing touch ups so often.

you also might want to look on the hawk forum for Brian Jones review of a spike hawk for suvival use. his having a diamond shaped spike that could split the dry center out of wood. i do like the looks of the talon style better though and maybe there are other utilitarian uses for it rather than pure combat.

Edge holding was a concern of mine also. I want it to be tough and hold an edge. That is why we're looking at 3V, A2, and L6. It has to have excellent impact resistance (which these 3 steels have) and be able to hold an edge. Of course, if you chop something down, your not going to maintain a razor edge, but I want to know that if I sharpen it and use the blade as a cutting tool (in a knife-like manner), it is going to be able to cut well and hold its edge.

I dont know much about hawks, but I really like that one! After seeing it, it got me thinking about getting something like that from Justin. I was thinking a green powder coat with black mircarta scales. :)

Too many points on it if you ask me; with the pointed handle it seems like it would be uncomfortable to carry around... Also, when you said 'halbred' I thought it would be something a bit longer with a more sword-like blade - guess I was thinking more polearm - anyway, it's more 'hawk sized from the looks of it to me. Still, nifty design idea though. :)

I don't know much about tomahawks, but it seems that the handle could be longer, if it's going to be used for anything besides throwing. Also, might be handy to have a surface for hammering with somewhere.

I would lose the point at the bottom of the handle, and also the point at the top of the blade. More of a flare at the bottom of the handle would be nice as well.

The reason I call it a Halberd/Hawk is because of the swept-up tip. It may be misleading to some. Any suggestions? Taking the point off the tip of the blade would nullify a huge part of the purpose of the tool, and the point on the handle is more for prying than anything else. I thought about rounding it off slightly, but decided I like it the way it is, since I feel it offers more utility options. As far as a hammering surface, I can use a rock (done it before and it works just fine). I want this to be multi-functional without becoming a "Swiss Army Tomahawk", if you know what I mean. Keep in mind, the hawk dimensions haven't been finalized yet. I'm thinking it will be between 16 and 18 inches in length, and the head will be 9-10 inches overall. Thanks for the comments and criticisms! Keep 'em coming! It keeps my brain firing.
