Half-serrated and BK1-coated Blades? Good Idea or Bad?

Hello Everyone,

Well, thanks to all the advice and comments, I think I am going to order up the Knifeworks 710 in M390. However, while I've been researching knives, I came across the 915 Triage and started to see the merits of such a knife for use in my work environment (I work in a lab with many, many extremely hazardous materials and can see the advantages of the hook and carbide tip in case of emergency situations - God forbid they should ever happen).

Anyway, I was debating between the 915 with half-serrated or plain edge and the coated or uncoated blade and would like to hear the advice of the people on this forum between the blade types and coatings (specifically in reference to Benchmade's serrations and coatings). Somehow I think that the serrations would be a waste of valuable edge space but might be advantageous when cutting cable, cable ties, flexible piping, cardboard, etc.. though I am worried that the cuts would not be as clean as those made with a plain edge. My reasons for considering the BK1 coating is that there are possible instances where the blade might get wet (accidentally) in DI or organics such as methanol, IPA, or acetone and I would want the blade to be as durable as possible in these instances. Again, I am debating this point because the N680 steel is supposedly already extremely corrosion resistant in its uncoated form.

So, any advice or suggestions about these issues would be greatly appreciated. Also, if anyone has any personal experience with the 915 Triage or the 916, please feel free to comment about the merits and shortcomings of this design.

All the best and hope you all had a Happy Thanksgiving.

Michael
