Half stops?

Do certain patterns always have half stops? If so which patterns have them. Or are half stops up to the manufacturer?
Thanks in advance

Sorry, no help here, but I do like them. When I use my leg to close a slippy a half stop is sweet!

It varies, in my experience, but I definitely like them! A knife with a squarish end is more likely to have them.

It is up to the manufacturer if they want to design in the half stops. I have a Canal Street moon pie trapper that doesn't have them and it has a very smooth closing action. My Schatt & Morgan English jack is rather stiff and the half stops make the blade really snap to each position. But, I like both...

G.E. Barlow has a half-stop despite its rounded end.Good job too with that macho spring:D

I don't think that any pattern is always made with a half stop, but I have found they are most common on older Hawkbills. - Dan

I've seen patterns that were always made without them and a sowbelly is one of them. I've never seen an old sowbelly with half stops. I like them too, but if it never had them back in the day I don't use them now when I reproduce an old pattern.

For the knife maker, is it "tricky" to get the 1/2 stops just right, or no more so than the rest of the blade/pivot assembly ?

I have about five different case knife patterns and the only one that has half stops is the peanut.

There is more work in a knife with half stops, The spring needs to come back to flush when it pops over to half stop. You can display it like that because there is no more load on the spring then when it's open or closed. With a cam end the spring is raised when half open putting more load on the spring. It's not a good idea to leave it like this for long periods of time.

All of the full size trappers (Bullit style r1123 or 28) have half stops. Is this always the case, or have some been made without them?

Thank you for the reply Mr. Bose. to quote you "With a cam end the spring is raised when half open putting more load on the spring. It's not a good idea to leave it like this for long periods of time. "
i have always thought this so and have wondered why so many manufacturers packed their knives with all blades partly opened, in display boxes or clamp packs. some of these, like Schrade USA, are still around in their original package, at 20 or more years in the open position.

I'm not crazy for them. I hear that half stops increase the life of the knife.Less steel on steel. Can anyone verify that?
