Hey guys. I got a few knives for Christmas, one of which is a red bone half whittler. It is my first whittler, and I noticed something about it. The blades are not in line with the handle. I mean, if I look down the backspring, and down the spine of the blade, it veers off to one side a bit. Is that part of the design?

Without pictures it is dangerous to comment, but if it is a single backspring design, then the blades are probably crinked (bent) so they will nest properly when the knife is closed. This will cause them to be somewhat out of line with the handle when open if that is the construction of your knife.

If it has a single spring and two blades, yes, it is. It's called "crinking" -- the blades are slightly bent near the tang to move them away from each other and toward the liners when closed. It allows for fitting thicker and longer blades into the handle than if they simply ground the blades down to fit past each other. It's part of the fine old art of properly fitting traditional multiblade knives.
