In Sweden we are blessed with a kinds of high quality special steels but simple his carbon steel like 1080 for hand forging I suitable dimensions can't be had. Minimum order is usually 10 tons or a cut up prize starting at 2000$.

Until now. I found a source of a steel named 75Cr1. Do you think that would be a good simple steel for a bladesmith with 20 successful knifes under the belt?

Yes, but the ting is that 75Cr1 is the only steel I found in 6-8mm thickness which if find necessary for forging larger blades. If you start with 4 mm you end up with 2,5 when poground and polished.

The up side is that I have a source for 75cr1 so I just can't to make sure that the trace amounts of Cr ain't a deal breaker for back yard forging and HT.

I don't think the chromium is going to be a problem. You just most likely won't get any benefit from it without getting it into solution with a soak at proper temp.

Come next summer in Croatia on vacation ... in Zagreb , firm Strojopromet
they have steel as much as you need

We are actually thinking about going to Croatia. Been thereally once and have heard grateful things about the islands.
