I am going to be visiting the Cabela's in Hamburg, PA next month. I'll be coming north from MD, through the Lancaster area. 222 to 61. I plan on spending a good amount of time at Cabela's, but would like to visit the park nearby, Hawk Mountain etc. Are there any places I should stop in the surrounding area, any attractions/restaurants? I will try to stop by Country Knives in Lancaster. I went there last year, but kind of took a whirlwind tour. The city of Hamburg's website isn't as helpful as I'd like ;).

Thanks.

There really isn't much of anything in Hamburg but Cabelas, there is a railroad there that gives scenic tours if your into that sort of thing but I don't know if they run during the week.Road America is just out 78 but that's not much more than a tourist trap.As far as restaurants, there was a place along 61 a few miles south,I think it was called Cousins but it's been a while since I was in there last, the food was good though. There's also a restaurant just south of Hamburg on 61 that always had pretty good food,I can't think of the name of it though. If your just making a day trip of it,you could always swing out 78 to Harrisburg and hit Bass Pro Shops or there are some neat historical sites around Reading, you can find some of that stuff on the Berks County website.

If you're in Lancaster on Tuesday, stop by Roots flea market. I spent a bit of time working in Manheim, PA and drove past the place all the time. I never did get a free minute on a Tuesday to stop by.

If you want one of the best sandwiches in the area, especially their chicken salad, you have to stop by S Clyde Weavers at 1509 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, PA 17601

This place is worth a stop at as well: Bube's Brewery. Take the tour and see the catacombs and the restaruant in them. Its too cool. Its in a little town, off the beaten path and the service is outstanding. The beer isn't bad either.

Have fun on the trip and let us know how it goes.

Hawk Mtn is really for fall viewing if you want to be awed !! The area does have some nice hiking places like the weird 'up side down river' !

I haven't been to Roots flea market for a looooong time. Anyone scoring any knives there?

Bube's Brewery is a great place....been there many times.

Restaurants....well...one of the best in the area IMHO is Haydn Zug's in East Petersburg. Great food and an amazing wine selection.....it's pricey though.

There's a lot of things to do in Reading and Lancaster,if your into fleamarkets,The Green Dragon in Ephrata is probably one of the biggest,it's on Fridays. There's another one north just off of the turnpike exit off of 222,I think that one runs Saturday and Sunday, there's a couple of good diners off that exit also.Another thing if you go out 78 is the antique car museum near Hershey.Reading has a,I think AAA baseball team to if that trips your trigger.

When I was working with Manheim AA I drove past Zug's every day. Always wanted to stop in but everyone said it was expensive. I was on the company dime with an allowance for meals so I passed.

Oh well. Maybe next time I'm in the area. :o

I used to ride around Lancaster all the time. Know several Amish farms where I could get fresh eggs, fresh apples etc. I've been to the Green Dragon, they're only open Fridays. I've been to Roots several times, a knife vendor who had set up at the very small Shrewsbury Markets, used to set up at Roots. Not sure if he's there anymore, I need to get up there again.

Thanks for the suggestions, the last time I didn't get enough time to spend looking in the gun room. I plan on getting at least 3 hours in there, maybe more. Cabela's has been the only store I like to shop in, just take my time. I am either going the Saturday before Independence Day, or the next Saturday, my b-day. Depending on the crowds, I will probably go on my b-day.

I have a Bass Pro about 30 min from work, but I might stop by the one in Harrisburg.

In regards to knives, I haven't gotten any from the aforementioned vendor at Roots, but I did pick up a BM 550SE for about 30 bucks, and a whole box of Vic classics for about 1-3 bucks each, which I gave away later.

Keep the suggestions coming, thanks!

If your going the Saturday before the 4th,the Kutztown Folk Festival should be going on,it's about 10 miles east of Hamburg on 78.
