I just bought 2 1/2 pound blacksmith hammer at sears I think it will do for now. The handle seems slick does anybody have any suggestions on how to make it have more grip

might try sanding with the grain with 60-80 grit or lay out an overlapping grip, or free hand a texture with a Dremel tool and small wood engraving bits, then lightly sand to take down the sharp edges.

You might want to re-handle the hammer. Off the shelf handles are usually too small and the general ovoid? shape not comfortable for me. Hopefully someone who knows more about handle shapes will chime in.

Handles should be smooth unless you like blisters and you should not be death gripping the handle either. I rasp my handles down to fit my closed hand then sand smooth.

I sand off the old slick finish and refinish with a mixture of beeswax, boiled linseed oil and some turpentine. It makes for a much more hand friendly finish. -Doug
