All, I've seen a couple of HF hammers with fiberglass handles on sale recently.

Before I buy one, I'm wondering if anyone has a good way to separate the head from the handle.

Thanks!

Well I press them out,but lacking that just lay the head across the vice jaws with the handle down use something with a blunt end that fits the eye and hammer out.The fiberglass handle usually come out easier then the wood,I have had to cut them off and burn out the rest----Regards Butch

On the HF hammers I do like Butch, just put them in the vice and drive the handle out usually pretty easy.

Thanks! I have an old coal mining spike that might work - at least to get it started. I'll get a couple and try it.

Thanks!

May I ask what you are using them for?? Most HF hammers are not very good but will do adequately for basic forging. most are very soft and need some serious dressing before they will make a decent forging hammer. I use my cheap hammers, HF style cross peens, for cutting on the hot cut. That way do not mess up the faces of my good hammers. I know that many are looking for a cheap way to get into forging. I did the same and regretted the decision. I finally got a nice turning hammer from my blacksmithing instructor and it made a huge difference in my forging. I now have a nice selection of hammers but it has taken a few years to get them. I am now making my own and really like it. Whatever your decision good luck. Get it hot and git it hard.

I was lucky enough to meet the husband of a coworker from long ago when they did a society for creative anachronism event at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo where I work - was able to contact them, and now I go for informal blacksmithing lessons about once a week or so.

This particular hammer head i'm hoping to use to forge a war hammer - for display only :D

So if the metal isn't the best, I don't think anyone will be able to tell :D

I got my forging hammer from blacksmith supply I think.

Made my forge from zoellers plans and equipment, and just picked up a small anvil on Friday.

Still tuning the forge - has some sputtering that I hope to fix tonite.

Long story short - I just need a chunk of metal to bang on :D

I found a woodworking shop where you can rent equipment by the hour and might be able to work a deal with him where I can store my stuff and bang on metal away from the suburbs :D

Thanks all!
