Hi, I was just wondering whether people prefer hammer polls on their tomahawks or not around here. I am thinking about getting a new tomahawk and Im wondering if a hammer poll is worth it. Can you hammer tent stakes without it? Will it damage the eye of the hawk over time?

I had a pretty inexpensive tomahawk with no hammer poll that I hammered tent stakes with, and I ended up flattening the back of the eye a bit. If I wanted a tomahawk primarily just for chopping or throwing, I would go without the hammer poll because it is lighter. If I want more of an all-round camp tool, it seems like a good idea to have the poll.

For serious work, I prefer a hammer poll. For light work, fast miles, or throwing, no poll.
A spike hawk is good for turning stuff over without having to stick your fingers under it. Handy if ya live around scorpions or venomous reptiles.
