I am looking for a good cross pein forging hammer. I would like it to be hand forged. Please let me know of makers you guys like. It can be already made or let me know the name of someone that can make me one. Here is the name that my bladesmith instructor suggested. http://www.brentbaileyforge.com/ . They look like well made hammers. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

Uri Hoffi's hammers are great. Big Blue and some others make an excellent Hoffi style hammer. It is my number one favorite hammer.

Now, with all that said, a hammer...no matter how nice or expensive....will not forge by itself. I would suggest learning the basics for a good while with a standard Blacksmith's Depot, Lowe's, Home Depot, (or other) cross pein. By the time you have the process mastered a bit, you will be better able to determine what you want in a hammer.

I know this isn't what you are looking for, but I just bought an offset Japanese forging hammer from Japan Woodworker... it is hand forged by a specific smith... and I've never enjoyed hammering in bevels more. The control is incredible.

I'd recommend the Swedish or German pattern cross peen from Blacksmithdepot.com
2.2 pound (1000 gram) in either, peddinghaus over any other.

I do have a basic hammer. It will work for now though. When I start forging on my own I will want a better hammer. I do like the hofi style as well. I was able to hold one a at pieh tool here in Arizona. The short handle works well for me. Thanks for the help so far.

For what it's worth, I lived a year in Chico, just over from Brent in Orland. I talked with him a few times, saw his shop, etc. He's a great guy, and real pro.
