Hammered Finish

I tired searching for tips, but I didn't come up with any.

Has anyone tried doing a hammer finish on a knife? I've got a DR Typhoon balisong, and I'd really like to try a hammer finish on the handles. Is it as easy as hitting the handles with a ball ping hammer? Does anyone have any tips, advice, or thoughts on the subject?

Thanks guys!

The proper term is ball-peen, not ping. I don't suggest trying it.

hahaha, yeah ball peen. Thanks for the correction.

Why not try it? Is it that difficult to get a decent result?

I was aslo planing on trying some stippling instead of using checkering to aide in gripping the knife. Any tips, tricks, or expereince doing this?

I just want to try something different, and have a knife with a finish you don't normally see, so long as it would come out good. And for reference, most of my finish knowledge comes from firearms. Not that I've done much finishing myself, but for the things I like. I wish I felt capable of fish scale or basket weave "checkering."

Thanks again!!

Use an electric engraving pen to add stippling. You can also do some nice patterns with it.
Peening with a hammer will probably ruin your scales.

I don't think peening after the blade has been heat-treated will work at all. If you disassemble it and anneal the blade, then peen it, then heat treat it all over again, then reassemble it ... it'd be easier to start from scratch with a new knife.

Use a jewelers' peen (smaller/lighter) and put the disassembled scale on a hard flat surface with a thin piece of leather between. Start out by tapping it lightly. Go over the whole scale. If you want more, then repeat. Don't work too much in one area. It can get out of hand easily.

My vote: Go for it!

The typhoon kit is meant to be worked on. Have some fun with it.

If I may chime in here , I say go for it too but !... Like Mr. Koster good advice
and put the disassembled scale on a hard flat surface with a thin piece of leather between
make sure you do not hit it too hard especially in near the middle parts of the handle , you could possible cause the handle piece to warp slightly which would ruin your knife.

Good luck and you MUST post pics when done ! :D

If you've got a Dremel, you could buy one of those round diamond bits and do your stippling that way.
I've only ever done it on a flat surface...
Good luck!
