Hey all,

I just watched my copy of the Advanced Damascus patterns CD from J.D. Smith. I thought that it was very informative, and showed the whole process in a way that would be interesting to collectors and makers, alike.

Even though Jim Hrisoulas did an excellent job with his books, there are terminology and process descriptions and explanations on this disc that are even easier to understand, and follow than anything else that I have ever seen.

It is almost like going to a hammer-in, but does not take as long, or cost as much money for travel.

I highly recommend it. I THINK that the address to contact is www.hammersmithknives.com. I am not shilling or selling anything here, it's just that last year Keith Montgomery was looking for contact info for J.D. concerning this disc, which at that time I knew nothing about, and I purchased the disc and found it worthwhile.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

JD is a very talented bladesmith who gets little press these days.
I had a nice piece of his that went to a good home. His work can be exceptional with design that is outta this world.

I still kick myself for missing an asian inspired bowie of his on ebay 5 years ago.

I have also looked at my copy of J.D. Smith's CD on Damascus. I think that it shows in easy to understand steps what is involved in making different damascus patterns. As far as J. D.'s knives, I collect his work and each blade that he makes seems to be unique and creative. The first knife I got from J. D. is a large damascus, mokume and mastadon folder and is still my favorite folder. As far as fixed blades, I recently got a short sword from him that has one of the best damascus patterns that I have ever seen. Jim Treacy

I'd love to see some pics if you have 'em Jim - I've seen precious few examples of his work but have really liked what lttle I have seen.

I think JD's knives are some of the finest you are going to find anywhere.

Is there still going to be a second disc? The only thing that is keeping me from purchasing this disc/set is the cost. I realize that the production was expensive, but I don't usually spend that much on knife related items other than knives themselves.

It is not quite done yet, but will go out shortly. My disc says "part one of two" so either the DVD is part two, or there will be another issue. I understand the cost issue Keith, but the way I figure it, it is a book on CD and I have been paying up to $100 for books lately. Darom's "Custom Folding Knives", and Flayderman's "Bowie Knife". Not only that, but for the fact that there has never been anything like this on the market available before, it is a piece of history, by a very good knifemaker.

I have two J.D.'s, one is a damascus sleeve dagger, the other is a tanto, mounted by Christian Griesi, who was an apprentice of Michael Bell's. I will try to scan and post them tomorrow, but it may be Tuesday. The work, art and execution is first rate.

Best Regards,

Roger, I'd love to post pictures of J. D.'s knives. First I'd have to take the pictures, but the hard part for me would be to figure out how to post them. You seem to be an expert. Any tips? Jim

J.D., there is a picture posted in the second last post by Steven/Kohai999. It looks like it was added as an edit just before Steven made his last post.

jjtjr,

You take 'em and I'll post 'em for you or walk you through the process - whichever you prefer.

For some reason I don't understand, I can't see the images Steve posted. Any ideas on how to find them?

It looks like Steve only posted one photo as an attachment. All you have to do is click on the thumbnail. The photo is of a damascus dagger.

By the J.D., if you are looking to sell that sword you should post it in the For Sale: Fixed Blades forum over on the Knife Maker's Forums.

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=754

Advertising knives for sale in the discussion forums is against the rules here at Bladeforums. I am only pointing this out to inform you of something that you are probably unaware of and not to be a jerk.

If you are not looking to sell the sword, but for someone to adopt it instead, I would happily provide it a good home. ;) :D
