I saw that a few of you guys hammock in the woods and I was wondering if you would mind sharing some tips and tricks. Mostly I want to know what you guys have about ropes. I've been using 550 chord, which tends to stretch, and I figure you guys would know if there is something better or a knot that would help me out.

Bag the 550 cord - it's great for tons of things but hammock suspension isn't one of them. You will want some sort of webbing to protect the tree (I'm not a hippie but if you chop up the trees with your thin rope, they eventually they will fall on you and squish you in the night and so forth). From the hammock to the webbing can be more webbing or something like amsteel.

Insulation is another area in which there is a learning curve. You will tend to need more insulation under you than over you. A blue closed-cell foam pad from Wally World is adequate, an underquilt is more comfortable (and more costly typically).

Have a look here: http://www.hammockforums.net/forum/showthread.php?t=15516 for *much* more info and much better style that I am capable of.

Nice! Thanks guy! Yea I was worried about the 550 because the stuff takes years to degrade, and if I forget some in the woods it'll choke off the tree.

Amsteel whoopie slings. Before that I was using 610lb bankline. Go to youtube and watch the "Hammock hangin how to" videos by one of those hammock forums guys.

Whoopie slings, and I bought some extra webbing. Works great.

I'm thinking about getting some wide nylon strap and making some hammock straps.
