Ok so i have this blade i edge quenched and finished up. but i have no real sign of a hamon. its 5160. does that show a good hamon? and if so what can i do to bring it out?

5160 does show a hamon, just not as crisp as 10xx series steel. They can be hard to spot without etching the blade to some degree.

how should i etch to bring it out? a little ferric chloride? 10 15 seconds at a wakc untill i see it? how about how that cactus rose fellow uses bleach?

plain distilled vinegar should do it. Clean with baking soda, keep doing it until you get etch you want.

or many other variatiosn on this, as long as you're careful on etching, about a million ways to do it, and easy to polish back to original state, as long as you don't let it get too dep

Your might be able to get it to show just alittle but don't get your hopes up. You might be able to pick it up with 1000 grit. As long as you know its there thats all that matters.....:D

Mike, I'm doing hand-rubbed finish mine up to 1000 or 1500 that shows the temper line very well on 5160. You can etch it in ferric for about 5 min. and then rub it back out with steel wool to darken it up some.

that pure beer not acid. you're system can't filter it quick enough its just coming out in its original form. i'll be by tomorrow early to see if we can make head or tails of that little etcher. and we'll see how much motivation i have for some grinding
