I thought I had posted this question this morning, but I just regestered with Blade Forums and maybe I didn't post the question properly.

What is the putty like material that knifemakers apply to a blade during heat treating.
I think it or the pattern left after polishing and/or etching is called the hamon line.

Can I make this material at home nd if so, what are the ingredients?

Many thanks.

Most use satanite, which is bought as a powder and mixed with water. Many knife supply companies, as well as Darren Ellis sell it in small bags for a few bucks.
Others use stove cement from the hardware store (AKA refractory cement).

Mixing your own is probably not worth the time, as a $5 worth of either of the above will last for years.
