Finally finished this one up. I had posted pics of the blade and hamon before handle a while back.
Handle is stab. amboyna burl and stab. dyed box elder burl
Blade is O1- 3/16"X 9/1/2"x 1 3/4" @ the belly
Pins are mosaic and brass w/brass thong
simple filework
Pics are bad
I would like to know what you think I should charge for this one, it's the first one I've made without a buyer lined up and I really have no clue.???
Thank You,
Matt Doyle

Jeez Matt,I thought you just started making knives? that looks like a good job to me.Nice fit up! I'm not sure on the price its all in how much you value your time.

I remember that one. It turned out real nice and I think you did a great job. The price is totally up to you. I don't think anyone can tell you how much you should charge. You have to think of the amount of time and materials you put into it and how much you think they're worth. Maybe if change the question to "how much would you pay for this?". then you may get some response. BTW, I like those mosaic pins you used. I just got the exact same one to use on a custom order.

thats a really nice blade. i like the unique design. as far as pricing goes i agree with Ray, how much would you pay for it? again i like it thumbs up:thumbup:

Thanks everyone for the kind remarks. I actually sold that knife the other day for 150 bucks. Probably too cheap for the amount of time I had in this one but I really didn't have much money in it. The steel mill I work at loaned me the O1, and the bolster was a cut off from a different knife handle. The amboyna was off of ebay for only 16$, a few bucks worth of pins and spacer.... all boils down to well under 50 in material. Plus it was a relative. SHOULD HAVE CHARGED HIM DOUBLE!

Ray,
I like these pins but I have trouble with the centers on them coming loose. I have them in red and black. If I used anything other than a dremel with a cutoff wheel to cut them things went to hell real quick.

Joe,
I think this is only the 7th one I have completed. Not sure.

Just curious as to what techniques you used for the hamon (temp, quench ect) Many people I have talked to have said that you cannot get a very good hamon on O1. I have two 30"X6" slabs of O1 and would like to have a hamon on a couple of blades. Thanks in advance

Brian would be the one to talk to as far as the hamon goes. He seeems to be the king of the O1 hamon 'round these parts. This was my first one. If you search for "hamon finish" in the search you will find LOTS and also find pics of this knife before the handle. I coated with refactory cement then heated to 1475 for 7mins, quenched in airtool oil.Temper @ 425. Finished to 800, buffed, then etched in a solution of 2 capfuls of fecl,15 capfuls of white vinegar, 2 drops of dish soap. Neutralized with windex. I tried many different finishes after etch. Some I liked, others not so much. The finish on this blade is done with toothpaste. After etching and windex, I rubbed toothpaste into the blade with a paper towel under hot running water. Tried baking soda but it gave a less noticable hamon when finished and I personally like it darker.
