Hamon - Rutland Furnace Cement or Refractory Cement?

Is there a difference between Rutland's Furnace Cement and their Refractory Cement? I'm wanting to do some hamon work. Will either work just as well as the other? Also, in your answer, tell me if you have experience with it.

Lastly, are there any good tutorials on hamon work with O1, 1084 and 1095?

That's a great link by John White. And great info from him within it.

I've used Satanite almost entirely since I started with hamons. I ran out, and tried some Rutland's. I don't know, it may have a bit of a finer texture than Satanite, but not by a whole lot IMO. If it did, it might be worth how it puffs up, falls off the blade sometimes, and alternately is extremely hard to get off.

I never had a problem with Satanite sticking. I always scrubbed my blades down with detergent before claying, though. I find that it's pretty easy to get off your blade after the quench, too.

I personally wouldn't recommend Rutland's (the furnace cement) and definitely recommend some Satanite.

There is a whole lot of hamon info, and pic threads out there. Much of which makes my work pale in comparison. But, if you want to see some of my methods, here's a link to a WIP thread I did of the knife pictured with some W1 steel. This is a high-contrast type of polish on a pretty simple hamon.

I'd say your work is pretty amazing. I love that hamon. I'll check out your link. Also, where do you buy your Satanite? Thanks.

I buy my Satanite from Ellis Knifeworks- which is hightemptools.com now, run by Wayne Suhrbier. I've not ordered yet since they changed, but hear good things. Satanite is cheap. Go nuts.

I checked out that site for the Satanite. The pictures won't load for me but I found the stuff and it would cost me almost $30 for 5 lbs. of the stuff. Half of that is shipping. Do you know any places that sell it with good blade steel. I need to pick some of that up soon and I'd like to combine shipping.

I know what you're saying. I like to combine shipping when possible. Usually I'll order a few things from Ellis at a time. I'm stumped though, I don't know of anyone that sells both Satanite and steel other than K&G Supply, and the only carbon steels they have that will shallow harden are 1095 and 1080. Of the two, only the 1080 is thick enough for blade stock (3/16".)

By all means, go ahead and try the Rutland's out for yourself. Many like it just fine, I coated a cleaver blade up with it today and the thought even flashed through my mind to start a thread about how I hate it. Although, that would be a little extreme. It does work in a pinch.

Thanks, by the way.
