I'm sure it's been discussed before so can anybody point me to a good thread to learn about creating hamons?

is what type of clay, where to buy, difference from a regular HT, etc

any help is appreciated...

Many people use satanite. You might be able to get some from a local maker or order it online.

John White has a good tutorial on claying up the blade and and a couple of different ways of polishing out the hamon that don't take 30 days and require a Shinto priest chanting the entire time. LOL
