Hey all, been a long long time since I posted in the Spyderco forum. I have been a fan though since the 90's and have also done a lot of personal mods over the years but kind of got away from it for a long time when I was carrying mostly customs. Now that I work from home for myself I never dress to carry a heavy folder, so I have been gravitating back to Spyderco's with their light weight, excellent steels and cutting geometry.

Anyway, I have really liked the look of the Hanan but most of you already know how popular it's been. Now that I have one I wanted to report that this knife is pretty incredible on everything but flipping.

Shabaz did a disassembly video but didn't really spend any time talking about the merits of the build quality. After spending a lot of time with the knife apart on my bench I am amazed with the quality and attention to detail even at full retail. I'm not going to do a full review but wanted to point out a few things worth noting that were not in the Youtube video he posted. I also want to show what I did to address the flipper issue so if you don't like mod's be warned.

For starters I can confirm the bolsters and liners are titanium, seems to be mixed commentary on that.

Each knife is numbered inside the scales which you can see in Nick's video as well as my pictures. This implies that these were all hand assembled and tuned.

The bolsters and scales have hidden top hat style pins in them that align those parts with the scales. This is in addition to the screws, pins and pivot. I'm really blown away by these and have never seen them used before. Not saying they aren't, but I have not seen them, especially in a knife at this price point.

Finally the flipping, yep, it's pretty bad and I made no attempt to fix it. I did a flipper delete and used the mini-spyderhole to add an over sized thumb stud. This required a reprofile on the choil area to make room for the stud. I could have used a smaller stud and not had to reprofile but the smaller studs would leave a little hole exposed and needed to be offset. While I was removing the flipper I also reprofiled the plunge grind area and added a sharpening choil.

Finished it off with polished bearing races and a full bead blast, and I'm a happy camper. As far as I'm concerned the end result is a custom quality knife that flicks like a rocket and has a compression lock. Life doesn't get much better :D

Here are all of the parts of the knife. Notice the little "top hat" pins..

Here are the pins in place before screwing the scales and bolsters on. You can also clearly see the assembly number on the bolster and liner..

(Note, I had the forward stop pin in the wrong spot for pictures, it needed to be in the more forward hole)

Thanks for checking it out!

Thanks! The studs are from KnifeKits.com, $5.99 for stainless and $7.99 for titanium. They needed cut down a little on the center post because they are designed for a thicker blade stock, but they are pretty close to a perfect fit for the hole and no modifications are needed on the blade.

So the detent has decent strength for a thumbstud knife?

Yes, plenty, it’s a great flicker, the bolster being so close helps. If you want to try yours put a zip tie through the hole and trim it, should be enough to flick off of as a test.
