I have 2 questions for anyone who has ever ordered/used the leather honing plates (ProCombo hones) from Hand America.

1) With your hones, which form of Chromium Oxide did they send you, liquid or powdered?

2) If you have tried both forms on your leather hone (for knife stropping) which did you prefer?

Thanks,

I got the powdered form. I was expecting the liquid because they say they ship a small bottle with every strop... but I guess they ran out.

Yep I got the powdered form, instead of the liquid I was expecting.

That said it's damn good stuff :D

In my experience Hand American aren't the best at communicating via e-mail, but they are very concerned with pleasing their customers. A couple times I got "a little extra" in the parcel when my order has been a week or so late.

Great products if you are prepared to be patient with them.

Great outfit.

I got a 2x72 belt for my grinder, first rate construction and leather.

I also have his full sized ceramic sharpening 'steel' for the kitchen. A few swipes and then a couple of passes on the leather cover. Bingo, the ol' Henkles are shaving sharp.

Just curious what the typical shipping times are with Hand America? I ordered a steel from their web site earlier this month. I did not get any order confirmation, other than my PayPal receipt. I waited two weeks and sent e-mails to two addresses I had for them-no response. Now it has been over 3 weeks with no word from them. Is this the norm?

Just got a call from Hand America-my order was lost in their spam filter and is now shipping out to me today.

Hand American is top-notch, for sure.

I have both the CrO powder and liquid, and I like the liquid a little better. Less mess, but it works better if the leather is moistened beforehand. Both work very well and should last a LONG time. The smooth leather is recommended for stropping with CrO, and I've only tried the textured leather with SiC powder.

Their smooth steels and burnishers are the best IMHO. Also a nice source of SiC wet/dry sandpaper if you don't want to buy in the usual 50-packs. I'll also be ordering a 2x72 leather belt soon.:D

SteelDriver,

One of my hones has a dark brown/mahogany-colored leather on one side and a very light tan (unfinished) colored leather on the other side. Both sides feel very smooth.

Do you pre-moisten the light tan side and then put the liquid CrO on that?

Thanks also Torz, Yog, Sando and Greg.

--SAK,

That's right, put the CrO on the tan side, the maroon side is specially treated for finishing strokes and should be used plain.

BTW I put mine on dry (just a few small crumbs covered the whole strop) and rubbed it in with a finger. At first is was a little uneven but after stropping a few times it all filled in nicely. And boy does it work.

I have ordered both the liquid and the powder. On a leather grinder belt I use the liquid and on a flat plate I use the powder.
I have had great experiences with Hand American. They don't always answer the phone, but that is to be expected from such a small company.
They treated me right and will get my business in the future.

I have the leather pro hone and have ordered other supplies from them and can say that they want you to be pleased with their products and I have found all products that I've ordered to be first class! Great company!

Yes, I use the CrO with the light tan side. I just wet the leather with my finger before using the liquid CrO because the leather is so dry sometimes that it absorbs the liquid before I have time to spread it. Wetting the leather beforehand slows this fast absorption.
