Mike,
Whst does your average daily production look like? (good days)
thanks,
david
Thanks for taking time to post..
I really appreciate it man...
Regarding Daily Production as of Febuary 2011 in my Texas Knife Shop..
In January of 2011 I completely revamped my knife shop converting it from a High Production Midevil room of Hell and Grinding Smoke into a much more refined Studio Environment with improved lighting, ergonomics and a new focus on cleanliness, leather chairs, new hot rod computers, new flat screens, new mills, new white paint, granite counter tops, new grinders, new 2011 Hepa dust collection. I have a thirty foot long wall of glass that is nearly 5/8" thick installed on the east side of my shop.. The Natural Sunlight is incredible..
Right Now I am working on full blown custom hand made folders where each part is cut by hand on a bandsaw and then hand profiled and assembled into a unit without cad work or cnc... Each folder is unique and the blades and frames are finished by mirror polishing and then hand rubbing.. I am not setting any time limits or concerning myself with productivity.. The entire focus is on the individuallity and execution of the knife..
These Folders are averaging 24 manhours per unit and thats on a "good day"....
My sole source of income is knifemaking and I support a family of four.
My health care alone is over $800.00 per month and my house payment is $2,000.00... I like stone crab claws and rib eye steaks. You can figure out the rest of the story..
If I dont work, I dont eat....I have to work hard just like everyone else in America..
Last Year I focused on Productivity and had my shop set up much differently.. I built primarily fixed blades in 2010 utilizing predictable synthetic hand materials such as G10 and Carbon Fiber and bullet proof blind bolt construction methods...
Fixed Blades in 2010 required anywhere from 2 Manhours to 20 Manhours depending on the variables, size, blade finish, etc, etc. etc...
Its just alot of hard work in the base case but I am very grateful that I am able to provide a home, food, transportation and health care to my family by working as an artist and creating custom cutlery.. I am just very fortuntate that the knife community supports me...
Huge Respect from Texas...
