Hand checkering

Ben Seward and Josh Fisher and myself are three that I know of who have done hand checkering on knives.

What do you think of it John? I started looking into it to increase gription on my hunting knife design, but I think it also could look pretty cool.

I have a Josh Fisher slip joint that is checkered.
you are welcome to check it out anytime.

Practice, practice, practice. Its not easy, especially on curved surfaces. Its really easy to jump lines and over run.

To me there isn't much gray area with checkering. Its either good or its terrible. Crossed rows and overcut borders area death blows to checkering.

J Doyle you forgot 'patience ' Do it one step at a time . be familiar with flat , simple curve then complex curves. when tired - 'stop' , take a break . Gunsmithing books will help . You can vary patterns , checkering techniques. -- then you can graduate to checkering steel . I've done more handgun checkering on steel than wooden handles on knives .

i think it is fantastic. those 3 guys mentioned do a hell of a job at it. i think it adds great visual appeal as well as adding functionality.

I've checkered this handle.
It is a slow process but I find it enjoyable
(it's a three finger knife for myself in olive wood)

checkering titanium is no problem [unless you're using one of Mecha's super alloys ! ]
I found for me more interest in engraving or even relief carving knives than checkering .

By the way, Midway company, who made this video, sells all the tools that you see in the video as well.

Checkering the front and back straps of a pistol can also be done with something like 20 LPI, and better if you make 'flat top checkering ' instead of bringing them to points. This saves on clothing wear for concealed carry while maintaining excellent grip !
