Hand Drill and Punkwood Fire

Well it was another day of hand drill practice. This time I decided to video it. I used only materials I found on site, except for my Farmer. I decided to use a marginal tinder bundle and paid the price. The price was another coal and some punk wood.

Another great one. I have watched all of your YT videos, great stuff. It's almost like you could teach this stuff for a living! :cool::D

I also like how you mainly use your US knife or a SAK for so many things. It's amazing what a simple pocketknife can do in skilled hands.

You can learn it. First learn the bow and drill then move to the hand drill. Lots of good info on the web for both. It just take time and blisters.

Great video, and a great job to push through the crap tinder and get the fire.

I don't know how many times I have failed at fire after I got a coaldo to a crap tinder bundle. That punkwood is a great trick!

I still have yet to get serious with a hand drill, I need to get off my ass and get her done.

I am with you Tony, I have had alot of failures with tinder bundles also. I try to show it like it is. Glad you like the punkwod it works real well. Now get off your ass and get to work on it.
 
Great video as usual IA. Demonstrates your skills and your knowledge very well. As well as your perseverance. Sometimes the humidity is so high here that even if you get the coal the tinder bundle can be a pain to blow into flames. I've never tried it with the hand drill...still working on that one...but I have done that with the bow drill, and punk makes a great coal extender/expander. The last time I just skipped the tinder bundle and just transferred the coal to the punk, expanded the ember to a very large size by blowing on it a lot, and used the heat of blowing on the huge ember to ignite very small dry twigs.

I thought that was great to learn for those rare times I can actually find dry punk here. A lot of times I have to put whatever materials I am going to use for fire on a rock in the sun for a while just to make things a lot easier.
