Man is that ever tough to do!!! I did all of the right things, had the right materials, and still couldn't get a coal. Any advice on how to do this method?

Everything is tough until you can do it. Typically, under good conditions, with good material, you can expect a coal in the 15 to 20 second range, so once you get the hang of it, it won't seem so difficult anymore. The best thing you can do is take a video of you doing the hand drill so maybe we can see what you're doing wrong. Also, you say you're using the right materials but what are they?
I used Mule Fat for the drill and the board. I cut the notch and followed all of the steps. I think it is the rpm ratio. I used a lot of downward pressure as well.
i believe it is the rpm rate. I don't have a proper camera, but I am using the materials my instructor gave me. I wonder if my triangle part of the notch is too wide? Maybe the material can't gather properly. I get heat, but no smoke.
