HAND DRILL MADE EASY (thumb loops)

Wow...one of those ideas I feel like an idiot for not having thought of first.

awesome.

Considering the absolute circus (think clown) I have been with the hand drill, I'm going to have to give this method a try. I may still be a clown, but I'll be a clown with a coal.

There are a few folks who do this. Magnussen showed me his little thumb harness last year.

The purists of course don't like this :D The argument usually being made that the point of the handrill is absolute minimal tools. No cordage, use of pre-made drill (e.g. mullein stock) and soft hearth materials that can be notched with sharpened/flaked stones instead of a knife. This is one technique where it seems having the best of materials on hand makes all the difference and I usually point out is least likely to be present during a survival situation.

Still, it is a milestone to do this. I got my first hand drill ember while tag teaming a drill with another individual this weekend under instruction from a well known survival instructor in the area. I haven't been able to replicate doing it with my lesser materials and by myself at home. So I consider myself failed on this still, but I'll keep at it. Leads to bruised palms and that means lonely nights :D
