hand drill materials?

so i work at a plant nursery specializing in bromeliads. certain varieties produce a spike similar to yucca. anyways, i was wondering if anyone has ever tried using the spike in their hand drill? i only ask because i can get my hands on a bunch of spikes but yucca and muellin not so much.
