Is it all just about personal preferences or there is something special to it?
I'll be finishing my variable speed KMG setup this week and wondering if there is any advantage of hand finishing.
If you don't have variable speed grinder I can understand need for hand finishing but with variable speed you can make it really slow and should be able to do really nice finishing job. Am I right?

I dunno...maybe i suck but I can never get the finish I want on a grinder. I dont like vertical lines and prefer a nice hand rubbed finish, but its just personal preference and doesnt make any difference as far as the blade goes.

I don't like the vertical lines either -- want them to follow the blade. Can't really do this on the KMG platen out of the box (at least, I can't). I did run across a picture of a homemade attachment that can be put on top of the small wheel grider to allow grinding along the length of the blade right up to the ricaso, and I think I'm going to try that out -- should be able to get a good finish up to 800 or so, and then sand higher if I want. Wished I'd saved the picture, I could post it, but I can't even remember where I saw it.

Hi Alex,

Perpendicular versus parallel lines, it all comes down to personal preference. Personally, I don't see anything wrong with a machine finish if it's a user type knife and priced accordingly. If it's a high-end user or a showcase knife, then IMHO a nice hand rubbed finish is the only way to go....but it takes more time, so you have to factor that into your price.

Try a Scotchbrite belt to blend the belt abrasive marks in well. They work like a champ.

They come in fine, medium and course I believe.

Broken in 400-600 grit cork belts works well too.

What Darren Ellis said also.
