Hand Forged Cleavers (Deba) from Korea

I live most of the year in Korea. I am back in CA for the holidays. While there I get a lot of very good use out of the local hand forged cleavers in various sizes. So I figured I'd bring a few back for sale.

These are hand forged, one at a time, from carbon steel. The smiths use both leaf springs (5160 or close to it) and railroad rails (close to 1080). They are finished rough, which keeps the price way down, but the heat treat is very solid. The handles will not come off witout a sledge hammer or a fire. They easily take and hold a razor edge, and are pretty darn good for everything from slicing to heavy chopping. They have good heavy spines for chopping/pounding, but are forged down nice and thin with very good edge geometry.

I have large, medium, and small.

Large (1 piece) is $60. 13 inches overall, 8 inch blade.

Medium (Now 2 pieces--top piece sold) are $50. 11.25-12 inches overall, 6.5-7 inch blades.

Small (1 piece) is $40. 10.5 inches overall, 6 inch blade.

There is also one Gyuto or "Chef's Knife" for SOLD. It is good carbon steel, ground and heat treated like the others, but appears to have undergone minimal forging.

They all have touch marks from the smiths who forged them.

All the tangs except for the small and the Gyuto run all the way through the handles and are peened over for a solid bond.

I'd also take offers on multiple pieces.

Mailing is not included. All of the handles are solid, save perhaps for a superficial hairline crack at the bottom where peened.

One medium and the Gyuto are sold. BTT

hello John FrankL

would you happen to know if these are double bevel? single bevel?

if double bevel, asymmetric or symetric bevels?

sorry for having to revive this thread, found a few of these being sold online so i was curious. i'm left handed and traditional japanese debas are usually single bevel so it might be problematic for me if i got one that's single bevel.

thanks

franz, you might be better off emailing John. Almost 2 years is a long time to be following a sale thread.

i have tried and he hasn't replied. he was online a few minutes ago and i dunno if he's read my message yet. which is why i tried responding to this post to make sure someone reads it.

thank you for the help though.

guess i'll just have to wait til he reads my email.
