Hand held sharpeners

They can get your knives sharp, but they will not give you the best edge, they often have obtuse angles and are very coarse.

they scrape metal from the blade which is usually way too much. dont bother with something like that if you value your knives. my brother in law used one on my uncle henry steelhead fillet knife. that was the last time he borrowed any of my knives and it took me forever to get the horizontal grooves out of the blade that ran its entire length.
i would go with a piece of sandpaper on a block of wood before buying something like that.

There are many, many cheap yet better portable sharpeners out there. Lansky and Spyderco have pocket sized sticks, DMT has keychain and credit card sized sharpeners. I like DMT's credit card sharpener; just slip one in your wallet and you're good to go.

what are some other small portables that work . i know the DMT fold out has really gotten some great feedback from this board.

I think the pull through sharpeners are not too bad if they are ceramic or diamond. I would stay away from the carbide ones. However, I do think a small stone or rod is a better choice for a portable.
