Hi, just though I would share what I have been working on. It started life as a stick of 5160. I have posted it in the hand made area before. I though I would share with you guys. Only power tool is a hand drill (now dead, won't even take a charge anymore). All the rest of the work done with only a couple of hand files, mini hack saw (what a joke for cutting 1/4 inch) and sand paper.

Initial cutting with the beast mini hack saw (I think it took 3 blades to finish)

Here it is now, getting close to trying to heat treat it my self (first ever attempt coming soon). I have some light green G-10 for the handles on this one.

here is the first one I started (still unfinished, till I do some smaller ones to try heat treating). I did this one on a knifemaker's 2x72 grinder, and he helped fix the full height grinds I kept messing up. I still need to reprofile the handle to make it a better fit with scales (right now it is too big with scales). I don't have any comparison shots with my FBMLE for size comparison, maybe I will have to get some taken. The scales on this one will be light tan paper micarta (maybe, that might change).

You might want to weld up that Talon hole, it's a Busse trademark and you wouldn't want it to be confused for a Busse.

You could also make it in to a bottle opener if you don't want to weld.

Here is a side by side and spine shot with the FMBLE. The hand made chopper is 1/4 inch thin.

Nice work,

The little blade looks like it'll be a hell of a slicer.

How is the big blade for strength? In the comparison with the BM it looks a little thin, and as it's not infi I always go for extra fat in other steels.

Still nice projects you got there, looking forward to the finished pics and some chopping pics to.

Looking good. The little one looks like a great little utility knife. I have a Atwood Prybaby that is pretty handy.

That chopper of yours is pretty much a 1/4" thick short machete :)

I'm pretty sure that its ok as long as its not done for profit, as a private hobby. But if that knife ends up for sale, then there might be an issue. :)

Logo's, Trademarks, Copyrights are a complicated thing. I can tatoo a Harley logo on myself, but I cant put it on a sheath without risk. But if I keep said sheath for my personal use, somhow its ok. Makes me dizzy.

I really like that big chopper you're making! Can't wait to see it after the HT - maybe you'll get some videos up with you using it?

Ya, with 1/4 inch in 5160 if I do a good heat treat with it, it will be plenty strong (that is a big if). I have had some pro knife makers offer to have me come over and they will help me. I am considering, but that is a long drive for me. It will be like a heavy machete. I drilled that hole before I knew about the trademarked Talon hole thing.

The small utility is much closer to being done. It should make a great pocket utility. (assuming I can get a decent heat treat on it)

I really like the small utility knife. I can't tell from the pics, is it ground on both sides or chisel ground?

Good luck man, I have made lots of knives on my own both stock and forged it takes alot of work. It also seems like you're always buying something :o

Looks like a fun project.

I've been wanting to give it a try myself, but don't have the "friend with a grinder..."

Looking forward to more progression pics!

the "friend" with a grinder is in Utah, and I am in Washington. That Big one on his grinder only took a couple of hours (still have a lot of smoothing and shaping to do). The small utility, I don't even want to think how many hours with a file I have spend on it. Probably over 100 so far.

Sweeeet, bro!! :) I'll take it!!! :D Seriously, my own little project has made me appreciate all the more what goes into building a knife. But I love yours!!

well, your project was my inspiration for posting those photos here. (I did not want to hijack your thread with them so put them in this thread).
