Hello all I am new around this great forum you have here. I was hoping that some of you more knowledgable folks could help me find a part. I have a Ka-Bar 1235 fixed blade that was handed down to me from my father. This was his first knife as a kid and somewhere along the line the butt cap(not sure if thats the technical term butits the peice on the end of the handle) fell off of it. I was wanting to get another one and try to restore the knife a little. It's seen it's better days, but for being close to 50 years old and being passed from my uncle to my father to my brother to me I guess its not that bad. If someone could point me in the right direction for the part and any background on the knife would be greatly appreciated. Also any tips on how to restore it a little would be very helpful too. Right now I can't upload a picture right now but the markings on the bottom of the blade are Kabar 1235 USA and the blade is about 5" with stacked prices of leather making up the handle.

Restoring that knife may be a daunting task, depending on your skill level. The aluminum pommels on those Kabars are held in with a pin. Is there a hole in the exposed tang where a pin once went through? The condition of the leather washers needs to be considered, as well.

You can search Bladeforums for previous restorations/modifications of Kabars. I'm pretty sure you'll find quite alot of info.

Good luck!

There are two prongs sticking out of the tang no place for a pin that I can. I'll try to up load a picture soon. Wasn't really concerned too much about restoring the leather, more the scratches in the blade and making the knife complete with missing parts if possible.

Here's pictures. Hopefully this will work. My first time using photobucket.

That blade has had some serious regrinding done to it. I think this is what a 1235 should look like:

The end of the tang looks broken. I don't know for sure, but it should be a hole for a pin meant to hold the pommel.

On the plus side, the handle looks fine. Provided you can get a butt cap of some sort on there, it could be a good user. Paul Tsujimoto, the cheif engineer at Kabar, posts occasionally in the Becker forum. Perhaps you could send him an email regarding your next step. Toooj
