There were several threads about plunge grinds lately, so I thought I'd add another. For those of you who hand rub/finish your blades, how do you get the plunge grinds to come out clean when the rubbing is lengthwise along the blade?
I use a 1/8" rod with sandpaper around it, then the edge ofa piece of sharpened micarta....then draw the sandpaper from plunge to tip....rinse, repeat till fishooks are gone!
I keep reworking what I've done either to get a better line or fix some imperfection. It seems like every one you remove just exposes the next.
Though I can get the ricasso square with a file and sand out the scratches with successive grits, I have read it should have a fillet to maximise its strength.
That led to trying to do a curved ricasso. If there is an easy way to turn the corner and run the fillet up the blade without forging a high fuller first I haven't figured it out yet.
