How To Hand sanding G10 scales to make them less coarse/aggressive. Sand paper grit sequence ideas please.

I have some G10 scales that I would like to make smoother. I am planning to hand sand them outdoors wearing a mask rather than using my palm sander due to concerns about fibers. I was thinking of 400 --> 600 --> 800?
Thanks in advance for any thoughts on this.
