Hi everybody,

the weather was rainy today but I needed a bit of fresh air and decided to go for a little walk nevertheless. I carried some stuff in a bag I recently made, the load-out shows rather random items since I was only out for an hour and didn't plan on doing any bushcrafty things.

The bag is made of 3-3.5mm thick undied but fatted leather, and therefore has a nice colour and beautiful softness (yet it is very strong). This is not my design, I have seen a similar bag as a fashion item on a japanese page for sth around 200$. The two things that went through my head were: "Hey I could use a bag like that" and: "If I make my own, it will be much cheaper!".

So here are some photos of it. Please excuse the cellphone-quality pics.

The strap is an old swiss army belt I got for next to nothing.

It has a looong belt loop:

It is very tightly sewn with waxed dyneema cord - I am sure it would hold water for a long time.

Items that I carried in the bag for the little walk. Although the bag isn't exactly ultra-light, it feels comfortable to carry for me.

Tried to pack some more into it at home. It's dark here already so the poor cellphone picture quality was degraded by a higher Iso (and some camera shake, of course..) *Sigh*, at least no need to pixel the keys, haha.

If you don't close the bag, its volume is comparably huge and comes in handy for carrying very important survival items :D :

And of course a pic of my knife: made by the german maker Juergen Schanz, modell called "viper middle", mine has a scandi grind.

I think I will make another bag like this, with slightly thinner leather (1,5-2mm) to save a bit of weight, and a "real" belt closing mechanism. The "fake" one is really nice for the city to have a very quick access, but for the outdoors I think I'd prefer the old fashioned kind.

Hope you like it!

Best regards from over here,

l.

looks good -- on your next one you might consider a gusset, which adds volume without adding a lot of weight.
shoulder bag I made so you get an idea of what I'm talking about.

Thanks guys!

1066vik - great looking leather work. Good idea with the gusset - with the thinner leather I am going to use it also should fold over well. I really like the closing mechanism of your bag, too, very minimal but probably works great. Might consider this as well!

I have several repro CW era leather goods that use the finial button closure. It is a good design feature. You might look at some of the "possibles" bags at Dixie Gun Works, Track Of The Wolf, etc. for design ideas. The beavertail flap and a few other traditional designs protect the contents from damp and loss without requiring a fastener.

Nice bag ,you should be very proud to wear such a well thought out and handmade item.

~ Nice work Lightleak, looks like a real user, should last a long time with such good construction.

Thanks guys. And yes, I am proud I made this myself and proud to wear it! I feel it is just a great experience to make one's own gear - you just look at the items differently when you know how many hours and thoughts you (gladly) spent to bring it to life.

best regards,

l.
