Hand shaped handles after the fact

Has anyone sent their mag handled knives back to the shop to be hand shaped? Can it be done/will the shop do it?

I have both a FFBM and HHFSH with mags on them and,1. I love the smooth grips on my older Busses, 2. The mag grips on these fat knives are a bit much and, 3. there is plenty of material to work with.

Just wondering if anyone has had this done? Was going to do it myself, but would rather have someone who does it for a living do it.

Thanks

Rob

Rob,

YEP, just did it this summer. I sent my HHFSH and my FFBM back to BC. Both of my knives had Mag Blk Micarta, and I wanted hand shaped Blk/Tan G-10.
Here they are.

How did you do it - sand paper? Grinder on a drill for the gross amount and then hand sand??

Looks good

Dewalt Orbital Sander. I started out with 80 grit to break down machining and rough out shape. Then I finished up with 150 grit.

I think Rob ment to have the Mag handles that are currently on the knives re-done to be hand shaped, not new hand shaped ones made as replacements.
I have not tried it yet, but I will on the NMSFNO I ordered.

Mine were done on the knife. I certainly can understand someone wanting it done in the shop though. I had to think about it awhile before I tried it.

I did my Meaner mainly with a file; just finished with sandpaper. I felt in control with the bastard file.

Yeah, that's what I had in mind, grinding down the grips that are on the knife right now.

I'd really have to think about it also since I've never done anything like that before.

I'd much rather have someone who does it every day do it, than it be my first attempt.

Just wondering if they did.

Yours turned out really nice. How does it feel now?

Nice looking meaner.

The funny thing is, on my MS (old style), the grips were worn almost smooth and I cut some grooves in after jabbing a tree and almost slicing my fingers on the blade.

The new handle shape is a big improvement.

They felt fantastic, but have moved on to another home. I was probably a little more confident, since I use an orbital sander extensively on the furniture I build.

I did a set of blue-black G10 FBM slabs with sandpaper by hand. Took me about an hour or two sitting watching TV. (No, I didn't wear a mask - and I sprinkled the dust on my cereal the next day too!)

I started with 60 or 80 grit and worked to about 200 or so. Came out VERY nice.

For my 'around the house user' GW I did it all by hand (not that big a job) with 80, 100 and 200 grit. It gets tacky, not slippery, when wet.
