Well, for my b-day my wife got me a Ruger Blackhaw in 45LC. I think this year I would like to use it for deer season.

Im not real familiar with the caliber, so I would like to know which ammunition is suitable in this caliber for whitetail. I am figuring 50 yards max range if there is a load that would be very effective at that range.

I dont handload, so factory ammunition is a must and a load that is easily available as I need to get plenty of practice in first.

Thanks!!!

You may have a hard time finding a suitable load in factory offerings. Most are still loaded to blackpowder pressures to keep people from blowing up their Colt S.A.A.s. The Blackhawk can take a lot more pressure than that. I use a 255 gr. lead semi-wadcutter at 900 f.p.s. out of my S&W 25-5, which is fairly mild to shoot, reasonably accurate out to 200 yards and would probably take down a deer handily if I did my part, but I've never hunted with it. I've run hotter loads than that through my Blackhawks, but I don't recall shooting factory loads in the last ten years or so.:o

With the Ruger you can use +P loads as made by Buffalo Bore or Corbon. No need to get the heaviest bullets, a 265 will work fine.

It is true, quite a few companies make hunting loads in 45 Colt, as said the 250-265 grain will easily handle a whitetail. You need not practice with the heavier loads however, learning the sights and trigger control can be learned with less expensive practice ammo, but shoot enough of the heavy to know how it shoots as well.

my neighbor hunts exclusively with a bowen mod'ed ruger bisely .45LC with the buffalo bore ammo and gets a deer or 2 every yr so it must work.

pretty gun too, best trigger on a pistol i have ever seen (or felt).........
