I have not payed much attention to everything GPS so I pretty much know nothing at the moment but I am researching.

I am looking to get a handheld GPS unit. I will use it for a little of everything: in the woods, ATV, boat, and hopefully in the truck.

The model I am currently looking at is the Lowrance Hunt C. It appears to have a lot of functions and with a windshield mount and a card looks like it will be pretty nice.

Does anyone have any comments or suggestions for a handheld GPS?

Are the only maps available ones that are bought or are there websites that allow you to download maps? Is it possible to have maps with street data loaded as well as having waterways/coastal maps loaded at the same time?

Thanks!

Ryan

I have a Garmin 60csx which has gotten many good reviews. It's one their better units. You can download maps or buy maps that you can insert. I bought a topo map for mine .

I have the Garmin GPSMAP 60Cx; I like this unit very much; the only area where there's room for improvement is the power; I'd like to be able to use high power Ion-Lithium rechargeable batteries instead of the old technology (NiMH).

I have a garmin e-trex vista HCX, it has been a great little unit and would recommend it to anyone.

For those that have replied, what kind of maps come with the garmin? Is it just a generic map or does it have road info, coastal detail, etc?

The base map on the Garmins is rather generic - major roads, towns, stuff like that. But the Garmin MapSource products can be loaded onto any Garmin GPS that's advertised as a "mapping" model.

Pretty much what Bob said. The topo (and road too!) maps are expensive; you have to take that into the equation. But Garmin is a standup company that makes very good (nothing is perfect! well...maybe a Busse Meaner Street and my new Honda CR-V :D) products.

I got a Garmin Etrek Vista Cx
My only complaint is it drains the batteries fast
I think they have a new high sensitivity version now...
