I just came across what I thougt was an interesting fact: that travel in rural Nepal is hindered by a lack of accurate maps because the unit of linear measurement fluctuates so much. One measure, for example, is the "rumale-kosh" (handkerchief mile), which is, according to Major Bhaktabahadur Gurung, "the time taken by a wet handkerchief fluttering from a walking stick to dry."
Can you imagine trying to create a map using that as your standard of measurement?
